Churchill Manor
Built in 1705, Woodstock, Oxfordshire, on the outskirts of London, was a massive undertaking that took 17 years to fully complete. This idyllic manor house, which also doubled as a lavish private residence, was often compared by the British to Versailles in France, the largest palace in Europe.
Still owned by the Churchill family, with the fountain of Benigni (1598-1680, the famous Italian sculptor), the ceiling painting by Sir James (1675-1734, the famous English painter), the huge geometric flower beds by Sir Vanburel (1664-1726, the English architect), the expensive Persian carpets and extravagant silver and porcelain tableware awarded by the previous dynasty, the whole manor still maintains a very intimate homely atmosphere.
The soft undulating slopes along the shore of the lake are so grassy that it would take more than an afternoon to pace the other side. Small flowers bloom on the slope, and the lake is a mirror-like reflection of the blue sky and water lilies; the occasional waterfowl passing by or fishermen setting up their poles never disturbs it, but adds to its tranquility.
